The first English New Testament from the original tongues ( W. T. )
1 John
Chapter Lookup: 1 2 3 4 5

The first pistel off S. Ihon the Apostle.

The first Chapter.

1:1
That which was from the beginning declare we unto you, which we have heard which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the word of life.
1:2
For the life appeared, and we have seen, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal|everlasting| life, which was with the father, and appeared unto us.
1:3
That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you that ye may have fellowship with us, and that our fellowship may be with the father, and his son Jesus Christ.
1:4
And this write we{these things we write} unto you, that (ye may rejoice, and that) our{your} joy may be full.
1:5
And this is the tidings(message, or promess) which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
1:6
If we say that we have fellowship with him, and yet walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
1:7
but and if we walk in light even as he is in light, then have we fellowship with him,{together} and the blood of {Iesus} Christ his son, cleanseth us from all sin.
1:8
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and truth is not in us.
1:9
If we knowledge our sins, he is faithful and just, to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1:10
If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

The second Chapter.

2:1
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye should not sin: and{sin not:} if{though} any man sin, yet we have an Advocate with the father, {even} Jesus Christ, which is righteous:
2:2
and he it is that obtaineth grace{the satisfaction} for our sins: {and} not for our sins only: but also for the sins of all the world.
2:3
And hereby we know that we have known him,{And hereby we are sure that we know him} if we keep his commandments.
2:4
He that saith I know him, and {yet} keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the verity|trueth| is not in him.
2:5
Whosoever{He that} keepeth his word, in him {verily} is the love of God perfect in deed. And thereby{hereby} know we that we are in him.
2:6
He that saith he bideth in him, ought to walk even as he walked.
2:7
Brethren I write no new commandment unto you: but that{an} old commandment which ye heard from{had at} the beginning. The{For an} old commandment is the word which ye heard from the beginning.
2:8
Again, a new commandment I write unto you, a thing that{which} is true in him, and also in you: for the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
2:9
He that saith how that he is in the light, and yet hateth his brother, is in darkness even until this time.
2:10
He that loveth his brother, abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of evil{offending} in him. {And}
2:11
He that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness: and cannot tell{knoweth not} whither he goeth, because that{For} darkness hath blinded his eyes.
2:12
Babes{little children} I write unto you how that your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.
2:13
I write unto you fathers, how that ye have known him that was from the beginning. I write unto you young men, how that ye have overcome the wicked. I write unto you little{young} children, how that ye have known{know} the father.
2:14
I write unto you fathers, how that ye have known him that was from the beginning. I write unto you young men, how that ye are{be} strong: and the word of God abideth{dwelleth} in you, and {that} ye have overcome that{the} wicked.
2:15
See that ye love not the world, neither{nor} the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the father is not in him.
2:16
For all that is in the world (as the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of goods)|pride of life| is{are} not of the father: but {are} of the world.
2:17
And the world vanisheth|passeth| away, and the lust thereof: but he that fulfilleth{doeth} the will of God, abideth ever.
2:18
Little children it is {now} the last time,{hour} and as ye have heard how the{that} antichrist shall come: even {so} now are there many antichrists come already, whereby we know that it is the last time.{hour.}
2:19
They went out from{of} us but they were not of us. For if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us. But that fortuned that it might appear, that they were not of us.|But they may be known, how that they are not all of us|
2:20
And{But} ye have an ointment of the holy ghost,|anointing of him that is holy| and ye know all things.
2:21
I wrote not unto you, as though ye knew not the truth:{trouth} but as though ye knew it,{unto them them that know it} and know also {how} that no lie cometh{is} of truth.{trouth}
2:22
Who is a liar: but he that denieth that Jesus is Christ? he{The same} is the antichrist that denieth the father and the son.
2:23
Whosoever denieth the son, the same hath not the father. (he that knowledgeth the sonne, hath the father also)
2:24
Let therefore abide in you that same which ye heard from{at} the beginning. If that which ye heard from{at} the beginning shall remain in you, {then} ye also shall continue in the son, and in the father.
2:25
And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal{everlasting} life.
2:26
This{These things} have I written unto you, as concerning{because of} them that deceive you.
2:27
And the anointing which ye have received of him dwelleth in you. And ye need not that any man teach you: but as that{the} anointing teacheth you all things, and is true, and is no lie: and as it taught you, even so bide therein.
2:28
And now babes{little children} abide in him, that when he shall appear, we may be bold,{have confidence} and not be made ashamed of him at his coming.
2:29
If ye know that he is righteous, know also that he which followeth|doth|{that all that work} righteousness, is{are} born of him.

The .iij. Chapter.

3:1
Behold what love the father hath shewed on us, that we should be called (and be in deed) the sons|children| of God. For this cause the world knoweth you not because it knoweth not him.
3:2
Dearly beloved, now are we the sons|chilren| of God, and{though} yet it hath{doth} not appear{appeareth not} what we shall be. But we know that when it shall appear, we shall be like him. For we shall see him as he is.
3:3
And every man that hath{all that have} this hope in him, purgeth himself,{themselves} even as he is pure.
3:4
Whosoever committeth{All that commit} sin, committeth unrighteousness also, for sin is unrighteousness.
3:5
And ye know that he appeared to take away our sins, and in him is no sin.{there is no sin in him}
3:6
As many as bide{All that abide} in him, sin not: whosoever sinneth{And all that sin} hath not seen him, neither hath known him.
3:7
Babes{Little children} let no man deceive{beguile} you; He that doth{worketh} righteousness, is righteous, even as he is righteous.{rightwise.}
3:8
He that committeth sin is of the devil: for the devil sinneth since the beginning. For this purpose{But for this cause} appeared the son of God, to loose{even to destroy} the works of the devil.
3:9
Whosoever is born of God, sinneth not:{All that are born of God do no sin} for his seed remaineth{abideth} in him,{them} and he{they} cannot sin, because he is{they be} born of God.
3:10
In this{And hereby} are the children{sons} of God known, and {also} the children{sons} of the devil. Whosoever doth{All that work} not righteousness, is{are} not of God, neither{nor} he that loveth not his brother.
3:11
For this is the tidings, that ye heard from{at} the beginning, that we should love one another:
3:12
{and} not {be} as Cain which was of the wicked{devil} and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? because{For} his own works{deeds} were evil, and his brother's good.{righteous.}
3:13
Marvel not my brethren if{though} the world hate you.
3:14
We know that we are translated from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother, abideth in death.
3:15
Whosoever{All that} hateth his brother, is a man slayer.{murderers} And ye know that no man slayer{murderer} hath eternal life abiding in him.
3:16
Hereby perceive we{are we assured of} love: (of God) {because} that he gave{left} his life for us: And {therefore} we ought also to give our lives for the{our} brethren.
3:17
Whosoever{He then that} hath this world's goods{the substance of the world} and seeth his brother in necessity,{have need:} and shutteth up his compassion from him: how dwelleth the love of God in him?
3:18
My babes,{little children} let us not love in word, neither in{nor with the} tongue: but with {the} deed, and in verity:{of a truth}
3:19
And{for} thereby we know that we are of the verity,{be of the truth} and will{can} before him put{quiet} our hearts out of doubt:{and so shall we certify our hearts in his sight.}
3:20
For{But} (if our hearts condemn us) God is greater than our hearts, and knoweth all things.
3:21
Tenderly{Dearly} beloved, if our hearts condemn us not, then have we trust to God ward:
3:22
and whatsoever we ask, {that} we shall receive of him: because we keep his commandments, and do those things which are pleasing in his sight.
3:23
And this is his commandment, that we believe {on the name of} his son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave commandment.
3:24
And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth{abideth} in him, and he in him. And hereby{thereby} we know that there abideth{dwelleth} in us of the{his} spirit(Gr. pneuma: spirit, breath or wind) which he gave us.

The .iiij. Chapter.

4:1
Dearly{Ye} beloved believe not every spirit: but prove the spirits whether they are{be} of God, or no:{or not:} for many false prophets are gone out in to the world.
4:2
Hereby shall ye know the spirit of God. Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is of God.
4:3
And every spirit which{that} confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is not of God. And this{the same} is that spirit of antichrist, of whom ye have heard, how that he should come: and even now already is he in the world.
4:4
Little children, ye are of God, and have overcome them: for greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
4:5
They are{be} of the world, {and} therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth|hearkeneth|{attendeth unto} them.
4:6
We are{be} of God. {and} He that knoweth God heareth|hearkeneth unto| us: {and} He that is not of God, heareth us not. {And} Hereby know we the spirit of verity,{trouth} and the spirit of error.
4:7
Dearly beloved, let us love one another: for love cometh{is} of God. And every one that loveth is{all that love are} born of God, and knoweth God.
4:8
{And} He that loveth not, hath not known{knoweth not} God: for God is love.
4:9
In this{Herein} appeared the love of God to us ward, because that God sent his only begotten son into the world, that we might{should} live thorow him.
4:10
Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his son to make agreement{a satisfaction} for our sins.
4:11
Dearly beloved if God so loved us, {then} we ought also to love one another.
4:12
No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfect in us.
4:13
Hereby know we, that we dwell{abide} in him, and he in us: because{For} he hath given us of his spirit.
4:14
And we have seen and do testify that the father {hath} sent the {his} son, {which is} the saviour of the world.
4:15
Whosoever confesseth that Jesus is the son of God, in him dwelleth God, and he in God.
4:16
And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love, and he that dwelleth{abideth} in love dwelleth{abideth} in God, and God in him.
4:17
Herein{Herefor} is the love perfect in{with} us, that we should have trust{confidence}|a free boldness| in the day of judgment, that{For} as he is, even so are we in this world.
4:18
There is no fear in love, but perfect love casteth out all fear, for fear hath painfulness. He {therefor,} that feareth is not perfect in love.
4:19
We love him, for{becaude} he loved us first.
4:20
If a man say, I love God, and yet hate his brother, he is a liar. {For} How can he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, love God whom he hath not seen?
4:21
And this commandment have we of him: that he which loveth God, should love his brother also.

The .v. Chapter.

5:1
Whosoever believeth{All that believe} that Jesus is Christ, is{are} born of God. And every one{all} that loveth him which begat, loveth him also which was begotten of him.
5:2
In this we know that we love the children{sons} of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
5:3
This is the love of God, that we keep his commandments, and his commandments are not grievous.
5:4
For all that is born of God, overcometh the world. And this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
5:5
Who is it that overcometh the world: but he which believeth that Jesus is the son of God?
5:6
This Jesus Christ is he that came by water and blood, (and the breath) not by water only: but by water and blood.(not by water only: but by the water and blood and the breath & spirit of God) And it is the spirit (Gr. pneuma: spirit & breath) that beareth witness,{testifieth} because the spirit (of Christ) is the truth.(verity) |for the spirit is trueth|
5:7
(For there are three which{that} bear record{witness} in heaven, the father, the word, and the wholy ghost. And these three are one.)
5:8
And{For} there are three which{that} bear record (in earth:) the spirit,(spirit and breath) and water, and blood: and these three are in one. (Old Latin: There are three that testify on earth: water, blood, and flesh, and them three I am. And there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Son and Spirit, and those three are one.)
5:9
If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater. For this is the witness of God, (that is greater) which he testified of his son.{that God hath born of his son.}
5:10
He that believeth on{in} the son of God hath the witness in himself. He that believeth not God, hath made{maketh} him a liar, because he believed not the record that God gave of his son.{because he doth not believe the witness that God hath testified of his son}
5:11
And this is that record,{the witness} how that God hath given unto us eternal|everlasting| life, and this life is in his son.
5:12
He that hath the son, hath life: and he that hath not the son of God, hath not life.
5:13
These things have I written unto you that believe on{in} the name of the son of God, that ye may know how that ye have eternal{everlasting} life, and that ye may believe on{in} the name of the son of God.
5:14
And this is the trust{confidence}|free boldness| that we have in|toward| him: that if we ask any thing{ought} according to his will he heareth us.
5:15
And if we know that he hear us whatsoever we ask, we know that we shall have the petitions that we desire of him.
5:16
If any man see his brother sin a sin that is not unto{to} death, let him ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death, {and} for which say I not that a man should pray.
5:17
All unrighteousness is sin, and there is {a} sin not unto{to} death.
5:18
We know that whosoever is{all that are} born of God, sinneth not:{sin not} but he that is begotten{born} of God keepeth himself, and that wicked toucheth{twicheth} him not.
5:19
We know that we are{be} of God, and that the world is altogether{all together} set on wickedness.{mischief}
5:20
We know that the son of God is come, and hath given us a mind{understanding} to know him which{that} is true: and we are in him that is true,{be in the truth} through{thorow} his son Jesu Christ. This same{He} is very God, and eternal|everlasting| life.
5:21
Babes keep yourselves from images.{Little children beware of images} Amen.
